ORIGINS OF THE BOWEN TECHNIQUE
The forefather of The Bowen Technique, Thomas A. Bowen (1916-1982) of Geelong Victoria in Australia, was a quiet, reserved and enigmatic man with an uncanny, but happily teachable gift for healing. Although details of his life history, professional training, and work experience are in dispute, there is agreement that an attempt by the Victorian government to discredit the technique he devised turned into its greatest promotion.
In 1975 Bowen was treating 13,000 patients per year (as assessed over a 27 week period) when the Victorian government launched an inquiry into alternative health practices. Not only were his clients reporting remarkable outcomes, he was found to be achieving these results with treatments that usually involved only two or three sessions per client. In the end, an inquiry that initially appeared as a threat to his practice became a major promotion of the Bowen technique.
Over the years Tom Bowen agreed to train only a half dozen students. The first seminar they held was in Perth, Australia, in 1986. Among those initial students were the Osteopath and Natural Therapist, Oswald Rentsch.
In 1992 the Rentsches implemented a Teacher Training Programm under Bowtech to share some of the work of Tom Bowen. In 1992 Dr. Manon Bolliger founding director of Vancouver’s first centre specializing in the therapy, was amongst the first to study under the Rentches. Dr. Bolliger then brought it to Nova Scotia and in 1999 when became an Instructor for Bowtech. She trained Meryl Cook who resides in Nova Scotia, Jonathan Damonte in Vancouver, and Derek Murphy in Ontario. She was responsible as a Senior instructor for the training and accreditation of students throughout Canada. She has trained over 500 students in her work for Bowtech.
In 2008, she created her own school with former instructors from Bowtech to take the technique to a new level. The Bowen College continues to train students throughout Canada, as she no longer teaches for Bowtech. Her own curriculum offers a well-rounded approach, which includes interpretations shared by other original students of Tom Bowen, gems from former Bowen instructors who have committed to sharing, advancing and taking the work to a new level, as well as work based on her own experience with Bowen for the last 16 years.
